DAY HIKES
Lookout Point/Lookout Peak
Total distance: 4 miles round-trip to Lookout Point; 6 miles with optional hike to peak
Average hiking time: 2 hours total to Lookout Point; 4 hours total to Lookout Peak
Difficulty level: Fairly easy to Lookout Point; moderately strenuous to Peak
While our first hike to Lookout Point is relatively short and easy, allowing us to acclimatize to the altitude, the additional mile to the top of Lookout Peak is considerably more challenging – but the view from the top is definitely worth the effort! Looking nearly 4,000 feet straight down to the South Fork of the Kings River, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the deep gorge of Kings Canyon, while across the canyon to the north, the Monarch Divide cuts a jagged profile across the azure Sierra sky – and looking east, the peaks of the Sierra Crest span the horizon!
Mitchell Peak
Total distance: 6 miles round-trip
Average hiking time: 4 hours
Difficulty level: Strenuous (Elevation Gain – 1,995 feet)
This day hike is the most popular excursion with Sequoia High Sierra Camp guests. Situated on the border between Jennie Lakes Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, the summit of Mitchell Peak affords one of the best viewpoints accessible by maintained trail on the western side of the parks.
The trail rises 2,000 feet over a 3-mile distance – then ascends steeply to a spectacular 360-degree vista on top of a towering 10,365-foot granite peak! Although the last portion of the climb requires scrambling over rocks until you reach the pinnacle – the payoff is spectacular, providing incredible views highlighted by the Kings River Canyon, Monarch Divide, Sierra Crest and the Great Western Divide!
Seville Lake
Total distance: 12 miles round-trip
Average hiking time: 6 – 8 hours
Difficulty level: Moderate
Although this will be our longest hike, Sequoia High Sierra Camp guests who have hiked to/from Seville Lake say that it was well worth their effort and time. Located at the base of the Silliman Crest, at an elevation of 8,412”, Seville Lake is a pristine example of a glacially carved alpine lake – rimmed with green grasses, tall firs and white granite cliffs while also offering great sunning areas and clear water for swimming – a wonderful place to spend our last day in the mountains!
